When your dentist suggests getting your wisdom teeth taken out, you may not be sure what to do. Many people feel like if their wisdom teeth are not causing any problems, or they don’t feel pain, they don’t need to go through with the removal. However, a majority of times, wisdom teeth cause problems so it’s usually best to listen to your dentist’s advice. Leaving your wisdom teeth can cause a wide variety of issues, that can lead to mild or severe problems. Here are some of the most common issues that arrive when you don’t remove your wisdom teeth:
Pain
Wisdom teeth growing in can cause you to have mouth, teeth, and jaw pain. The pain can range from mild discomfort to unbearable pain. If the teeth grow in crooked or don’t have enough room, they can crowd and damage nearby teeth. They may cause alignment issues. Making treatments to straighten out your other teeth necessary.
Cavities and Decay
Another issue that arises when there is not enough room for your wisdom teeth, is cavities and tooth decay. The tight space makes for hard to clean areas, and impossible to reach places. Even if you take good care of teeth, these crowded spaces can still cause issues.
Infection
According to the Mayo Clinic, if your wisdom teeth don’t emerge from the gums, they can become trapped (also known as impacted), within your jaw. This can “result in infection or can cause a cyst that can damage other teeth roots or bone support.” So even if the teeth aren’t growing in, they can still cause issues.
Gum Disease
Sometimes, wisdom teeth will emerge partially through your gums. This can create a passageway that is hard to clean. The spot will become a magnet for bacteria. The bacteria can cause gum disease and oral infection. Tissue around the gums can swell, creating inflamed gums, and can be painful as well as hard to clean.
Jaw Damage and Sinus Issues
According to Web MD, cysts can form around your wisdom teeth, “If they aren’t treated, they can hollow out your jaw and damage nerves.” This can also lead to sinus issues including pain, pressure, and congestion. In extreme cases, tumors can form as well.
All these issues can form at any stage of the wisdom teeth growth process. From before they break the skin, to years after they’ve grown in.
